We have just purchased a great assortment of less common titles. The two collections were remarkably similar in that they both contain a large amount of very clean, mostly reissued lps and very thorough assortments of cds; the first predominantly Oldies and 60s soul, the second Blues, Country and some Folk. The records are mostly reissues pressed in the 70s and 80s with very few originals. They are, almost without exception, in excellent shape; the covers are crisp and clean and the vinyl is pristine. Some of the labels featured are Ace, Charley, Krazy Kat, Bear Family, Relic, Official, Crystal Ball, and many others. While mainly domestic, there is a healthy dose of British and Japanese imports as well. Most are priced from $1.99 to $4.99 with a few higher. We have sorted out the bulk of the Oldies, Soul, and Blues and created separate new arrival sections for them in the back of the store; the Country and Folk is mixed in with the regular new arrivals. The CD portion of these collections includes one of most thorough Oldies/Doo-Wop/Vocal Group selections we have ever seen. In 1966-67 Terry Knight and the Pack were THE MOST CHERISHED REGIONAL ROCK GROUP in the American Midwest. The band showed its commitment to the region by recording in Cleveland and Philadelphia, touring from Illinois to Pennsylvania and everywhere in between, appearing regularly on Cleveland's UPBEAT television program, and embodying an image consistent with the changing social and economic forces of the rustbelt 1960s (just look at the photo on the back of their first album). As a result, the group was immensely popular in the area. Although some of the Pack's best-known songs were covers of other artists' hits, I've chosen to highlight the group's original material here as a testament to Terry Knight's songwriting knack. Although often accused as a musical plagiarist, Knight was, in reality, just keenly aware of every pop-music movement, and he soaked up trends like a sponge. As a former disc jockey, Knight was well educated in American rock, the British Invasion, soul, rhythm 'n' blues, and ballads, and all of those influences come across in the Pack's records.
